Here's a sketch for a lamp, by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet. It's pencil on paper, all about testing out ideas, a direct connection to the artist's hand. You can see the ghost of the artist figuring things out, making decisions in real time. The marks are tentative, searching. Nothing is final, everything is open to change. It's like a conversation with the paper, a back-and-forth between what’s imagined and what’s possible. Look at the way the lines of the lamp base are drawn, then redrawn, the shapes shifting slightly each time. This process reminds me of the work of Philip Guston. He was also a master of the sketch, his drawings full of a similar searching energy. This piece isn't about perfection, it's about the messy, beautiful process of creation.
