Tartuani's "Landscape," created sometime between 1694 and 1794, invites us into an idealized pastoral scene, but also speaks volumes about the societal structures of its time. While seemingly bucolic, such landscapes often served to reinforce a particular social order. The shepherds, the fertile land, and the animals become symbols of a harmonious world, masking the realities of rural labor and social inequality. This painting invites us to reflect on the labor, gender, and social dynamics that are often unseen in such idyllic scenes. Who are these figures in relation to the land and to each other? Consider the roles ascribed to the women depicted here, set against the backdrop of a world in which land ownership and power were largely held by men. It asks us to consider not just what is shown, but what is intentionally left out, and how these omissions reflect the values of the time.
