Toshi Yoshida made this beautiful woodblock print, Supper Wagon, and what I love is how he captures the atmosphere of a nighttime street scene. Yoshida's approach to color is really remarkable; he creates depth and shadow with these layers of muted blues, yellows, and reds. It’s the way Yoshida renders the light from the supper wagons that really gets me. It almost glows, right? The banners hanging from the wagons, covered in Japanese script, pop against the darker tones of the night. Then you've got the dog, looking like he's waiting for some scraps! Yoshida's use of the woodblock technique allows for a kind of precision and control, but there’s also a looseness to the overall composition which makes the image feel alive. Reminds me a little of the way Edward Hopper used to capture a specific mood, it’s the kind of art that makes you feel more than think. What do you think?
