This is Cornelis Schut's "Child with Dove on a Cloud," made sometime between 1610 and 1655, using etching techniques. Schut was working in Antwerp during the Baroque era, a period marked by grand, ornate, and often emotionally charged art. This small print depicts a cherubic child, floating on what appears to be a cloud, reaching towards a dove. The image is striking in its combination of religious symbolism and intimate human emotion. During this time, the image of children in art often carried religious significance, representing innocence, purity, or divine grace. However, Schut presents this child in a tender, humanizing way. The gaze is soft, the touch gentle. The dove, a symbol of peace and the Holy Spirit, seems to be a companion rather than a distant symbol. Here Schut invites us to consider the human connection to the divine. What does it mean to find the sacred in the everyday moments of our lives?
