Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret created this male nude study as part of his academic training during the late 19th century. At this time, the male nude became less common. Dagnan-Bouveret's choice to paint it reflects his engagement with traditional artistic practices and his attempt to challenge or perhaps redefine conventional representations of masculinity. The model’s darker complexion and robust build stand in contrast to the idealized and often effeminate male figures prevalent in earlier academic art. Instead, Dagnan-Bouveret presents a more rugged, earthly vision of masculinity. Note the model's intense gaze and slightly confrontational stance. He’s holding a burning object in his hand, as if he’s making a political statement. This painting serves as a snapshot of a moment when artists were beginning to question and expand the visual language of the body.
