Jan Dam Steuerwald created this landscape with herder en vee in landschap using etching techniques. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal bands, with the darkest masses of cows and sheep anchoring the foreground and leading the eye towards a herder resting under a tree to the right. The use of light and shadow creates depth, drawing us further into the scene and across the landscape. Steuerwald uses the pastoral scene to explore the relationship between nature and humanity, playing with traditional landscape conventions to engage viewers with the Romantic movement. The monochromatic palette, achieved through the etching process, enhances the textural details, from the coarse fur of the cows to the gentle ripples in the water, inviting a tactile as well as visual experience. This interplay of texture and light serves not only to depict the scene but also to evoke a sense of nostalgia for a simpler, idealized rural existence.
