Curatorial notes

Jan Dam Steuerwald created this print, Boerderij bij bevroren vaart, which translates to Farm by Frozen Canal, sometime in the mid-19th century. During this period, the Netherlands was undergoing significant social and economic changes, with the rise of industrialization juxtaposed against the backdrop of traditional rural life. Steuerwald captures a seemingly simple winter scene: figures skating on a frozen canal alongside a rustic farmhouse and windmill. But, the composition prompts us to consider the relationship between the Dutch people and their landscape. The frozen canal, a common feature in Dutch paintings, becomes a space where people from different walks of life come together. How did gender and class affect one's experience of leisure in 19th-century Netherlands? Consider how Steuerwald uses light and shadow to create a sense of depth and atmosphere, inviting us to reflect on the beauty and harshness of winter. The artwork serves as a reminder of the intertwined histories of community, nature, and individual experience.
