So here we have Picasso's "Large nude in red armchair," painted with oil on canvas. It’s hard not to see a dialogue between the artist and his model, and even with other painters, like Matisse. I can only imagine what it would have been like being in the studio with Picasso as he made this, maybe trying to keep up, trying to get it down, to give a form, a shape to his perception of her. I really admire how the colors create a push-pull effect. I can see that the red of the armchair extends toward the viewer, whereas the green background recedes. But then those stripes in the armchair kind of pull you back in again! Look how Picasso uses bold lines to define shapes and forms; each stroke feels decisive, but there's also a sense of playfulness, like he's improvising as he goes along. I feel like the surface is thick with luscious paint. I am inspired by artists like Picasso, who challenge us to see the world in new ways. Because, for painters, it’s always a conversation.
