This etching, "Cybele roept de zon op terug te keren," was made by Jean-Baptiste de Poilly in the late 17th or early 18th century. The composition is split into two registers: the upper one is heavenly, airy and full of angels, while the lower register depicts Cybele surrounded by earthly figures and animals. The dark tonality and sharp lines give this print a unique graphic quality. Poilly uses line work to build up the form in the clouds and bodies. The light contrasts and textural details creates a visually engaging surface. The diagonal line of light coming from the angels onto the lower register provides visual rhythm and compositional structure. The image is divided by the dark sky with the bright light coming from the angels, creating a semiotic system in which the light represents hope and rebirth. Ultimately, the print invites us to consider the relationship between darkness and light, mortality and immortality, and the earthly and heavenly realms, reflecting an ongoing dialogue between classical mythology and contemporary thought.
