E. Boyd painted this crucifix, likely in the 20th century, drawing upon the deep well of Christian iconography. The central motif is, of course, Christ on the cross, an image laden with centuries of theological, emotional, and artistic interpretations. Consider the crown of thorns, a symbol of suffering and humiliation, yet echoed in ancient solar crowns, emblems of divinity and power. This juxtaposition reveals a profound tension – the sacred intertwined with the profane. The 'B' shapes could be an abbreviation of his name in byzantine style, as a sign of his presence. The cross itself, pre-Christian, was a symbol of intersection, a meeting point. Over time, it has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts; now it is a powerful force engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level.
