Constant Puyo created "Vrouw met bloemen en haar weerspiegeling in een meer", or "Woman with flowers and her reflection in a lake", using a photographic process, around the turn of the 20th century. The soft, diffused light and muted tones create a dreamlike atmosphere, evoking a sense of nostalgia and introspection. The composition is divided horizontally by the water's surface, with the woman and her floral arrangement occupying the upper portion, while her reflection anchors the lower part. Puyo manipulates light and shadow to obscure detail, emphasizing the tonal qualities of the image. The use of soft focus contributes to the dissolution of form, challenging the conventional photographic clarity and disrupting the established standards of representation at the time. Puyo's exploration of form aligns with the Pictorialist movement's broader aesthetic concerns, reflecting a desire to elevate photography to the status of fine art. The reflection doubles the visual information, inviting contemplation on themes of identity, perception, and the ephemeral nature of beauty.
