“Conversión De San Pablo,” or "Conversion of Saint Paul" was painted by Palma il Giovane in the late 16th or early 17th century. At the time, Europe was reeling from religious conflict and the Catholic church was attempting to reassert its authority, in part, through dramatic and emotional works of art. Here, Saul's life is transformed on his way to Damascus. Saul, a Jewish man who persecuted Christians, is thrown from his horse and blinded by a divine light. The figures around him react in shock and awe. Palma's painting offers us a glimpse into a pivotal moment of change. Conversion narratives are not only about religious transformation. They also explore themes of identity, and the complex process of questioning and redefining oneself. As you look at the painting, consider the power of personal transformation and how societal beliefs can both shape and be challenged by individual experiences.
