'A Resting Woman', crafted by Vilhelm Bissen, likely in the late 19th century, is made of plaster. Plaster is interesting because it is so receptive to detail, yet ultimately lacks the presence and durability of carved stone. The medium invites replication. Because of its relative cheapness, plaster allowed for the widespread distribution of sculptural forms in the 19th century. But it's also a very physical medium. Bissen would have had to build up the figure through many applications, and then carefully work the surface to achieve the smooth, sensuous finish you see. The sculpture is a beautiful demonstration of the talent of the artist. The drapery in particular, is a tour-de-force of flowing lines and deeply carved folds. But it is also an artifact of the studio, and of the complicated commerce that supported the arts at the time. Understanding the work that goes into such a seemingly effortless sculpture only enriches our appreciation of it.
