Jian Guzhai made this ink tablet, "Carving the Moon, Opening the Clouds" – a small, dark, dense object covered in swirling forms. This piece feels like a microcosm of the artistic process itself; the artist carefully removes material to reveal the image within, a dance of subtraction and creation. Look at how the dragons emerge from the darkness. The artist's hand is so present in the carving; you can almost feel the pressure and direction of the tool. The texture is like dry velvet, the way the light catches on the raised areas. And the white lettering contrasts beautifully with the deep black. It's not just about the imagery, but also about the surface. This carving reminds me of some of the relief prints of Dürer, where he creates depth and drama through contrasting blacks and whites. Like his work, this piece encourages me to look again, to look closer, and to see how meaning emerges from the simplest of materials.
