Berti Hoppe made this collection of photographs, 'Visit to Hainburg an der Donau, Austria', to document a trip, and pasted the photos onto a page in her album. I can imagine Hoppe being fascinated by the architecture of the old town of Hainburg, the gateways, the old yard... I bet she thought the same light that hits her also hit those ancient stones. What’s so great about photography, and also painting, is that you have to decide, and then you can take your shot. There is something so real about the way Hoppe has framed the images. The way she has positioned herself in relation to the subject matter. That's what art is about, you know, it's an exchange and ongoing conversation. Each generation of artists learns and responds to the generation before. The tradition of painting, like photography, is continuously reinvented and renewed through the vision and inspiration of the individual artists.
