Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing, Markense vrouw met kind op de arm, with chalk on paper. The smudgy, soft strokes make me think about how sometimes the process of making art is more about feeling your way through than getting everything perfect. There’s something melancholic in the greys and muted colors, but it’s also kind of beautiful, like an old memory. See how the chalk is worked into the paper? You can almost feel the texture, like you’re right there with the artist, watching the image appear. I really like the way the figures emerge from the background. Notice the fence with a few trees behind. Cachet probably looked at artists like Whistler, who was also interested in quiet, atmospheric scenes. It's like they're both showing us that art doesn’t always have to shout, sometimes the quietest voices are the ones that stay with you.
