Curator: Welcome. We’re standing before David Michael Bowers' work, "Eclipse." Editor: It's so serene, almost dreamlike. The cool blues evoke a feeling of deep calm. Curator: Bowers is known for his contributions to abstract expressionism and geometric abstraction; his work really showcases the movement’s key elements and influence. This is really showcased through a monochrome lense in this artwork. Editor: Look at the surface, though. You can almost feel the acrylic paint; those visible brushstrokes give a texture, and the use of impasto really adds dimension. I'm immediately drawn to considering the act of layering paint, the artist's labor... It is so clearly acrylic paint on canvas. Curator: Indeed, and that materiality contributes significantly to its presence within the trajectory of contemporary abstraction. These techniques allowed him to engage the language of gesture painting in new directions, departing from traditions promoted through the museums. Editor: I also see what seems like small shapes, all interwoven. What could be considered geometrical abstract painting in this instance. What would this mean regarding his process, in this context? The monochrome only helps amplify the geometry. Curator: The layered paint adds an atmospheric quality which enhances both the scale of the space within it. The cool tone allows it to bring about a sort of 'darkness,' if I dare say, from just looking at it. And you can see a point of light, as you know it must be. Editor: Yes, absolutely. Each material element enhances its narrative. Curator: Yes, this painting offers a space to contemplate material process. I agree completely. Editor: Ultimately, looking at how he carefully crafted each geometric shape and then added them together, really leaves me with wanting to do it myself.
