Here's a faded photograph, probably shot with a heavy box camera, of Dordrecht, featuring a sailboat, by G. Hidderley. It's hard to get a sense of the color, it's mostly shades of gray. I wonder what Hidderley was thinking when he made this. The composition is interesting with the boat smack bang in the center, and the town in the distance. The artist has made a decision to show it just like that. Look at the way the surface of the water reflects the light, suggesting movement and depth. Did the artist consider the placement of the sailboat in relation to the town’s skyline? The overall effect creates a feeling of quiet contemplation, doesn't it? Hidderley is someone I don’t know, but maybe, by looking at this artwork, I can start a conversation with him and imagine what painting, or rather photography, was like for him. We artists are in an ongoing exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity and finding new ways to express ourselves, even with photography!
