Pierre Joseph Hubert Cuypers made this sketch, "Kneeling Monk by an Altar," during the 19th century. Cuypers was a key figure in the Gothic Revival movement in the Netherlands, when the Catholic emancipation brought with it a desire to revive the grandeur of the medieval church.
