Bernard Willem Wierink made this drawing, Gedoofde kaarsen en leeuw geflankeerd door adelaars, using pen and graphite. It has a muted palette, almost like a faded memory. I find myself drawn to the contrast between the precise linework and the symbolic imagery. Look at how Wierink renders the lion's mane with such detail, each stroke carefully placed to create texture and depth. The texture is smooth, and the line work is clean and very detailed, something to be admired. The lion is the central motif which is imposing, regal, and powerful, and is offset by the strange images in the frame. It reminds me of the symbolic works of artists like Odilon Redon, who also explored the darker, more mysterious sides of the imagination. Art is just one big conversation across time, each artist building on what came before, embracing ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
