View from the Foot of the Finsteraarhorn c. 19th century
Editor: So, this is Johann Hürlimann's "View from the Foot of the Finsteraarhorn." I’m immediately struck by the almost… theatrical presentation of the landscape. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Well, it's funny you say theatrical, because there is a kind of constructed drama, isn't there? Like a stage set with rocks in the foreground, and then the rising action of the landscape culminating in the majestic peak. It's less about pure representation and more about evoking a feeling, maybe of the sublime? It makes me wonder about the artist's intentions. Editor: It does make you feel small. So, Hürlimann isn’t just painting a mountain, but an experience of the mountain? Curator: Precisely. I suppose, for me, it’s a reminder that art isn't just about what we see, but how we feel when we see it. Editor: I never thought about landscape that way before. Thanks!
