Tsukioka Kôgyo created this print, "Actor in the No Play Tomonaga," which is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum. Notice the figure's careful placement within a composition defined by geometric abstraction. Her ornate kimono, adorned with floral motifs, contrasts starkly against the muted background and the severe lines of what appears to be a structural beam. This opposition sets up a dialogue between decoration and austerity. Here, Kôgyo exploits the interplay of color and form to explore the tension between representation and abstraction, inviting us to consider how traditional subjects can be re-framed through a modernist lens. The work unsettles conventional notions of beauty, asking us to look beyond the surface and to contemplate the underlying formal structures that define our perception.

In No, dance is a remarkably stylized, slowly executed performance. While dancing the feet glide over the floor, never leaving the ground. In this print the stylization and stillness of a person calmly sliding over the smoothly polished wooden floor is tangible.
