Iosif Iser painted Dobrujan Landscape with Five Turk Women using oil paints. The colors are quite vibrant, with warm hues of orange, yellow, and red contrasting with the cool blues of the sky, and the dark hues of the women's garments. Oil paint, traditionally used for fine art, allows for a richness of color and depth, which Iser exploits to great effect. The brushstrokes appear quite loose, and the paint application is quite thick in some areas. You can almost feel the texture of the paint on the canvas. Iser's choice of materials and techniques elevates his work beyond a simple depiction of a scene, and creates something evocative and expressive. It shows the artist's skilled engagement with the history of painting, while also engaging with the representation of a specific cultural and geographical context. Through the materiality of oil paint, the artist gives dignity and presence to the subjects of the painting. This piece reminds us that any work of art can be better understood when we look at the how, what, and why of its making.
