Biography
Samuel Hendrik Serné (1826-1879) was a Dutch artist born in Haarlem and known for his depictions of Dutch life. His works, often executed in a realistic style, capture the essence of daily life in the Netherlands. Serné, who produced lithographs, etchings and drawings, was highly skilled at portraying the details of everyday objects and the natural environment. His work often depicts scenes of boats and waterways, reflecting the importance of water transport in Dutch society, as in the image above titled "The arrival of King William III with his royal steamer "De Leeuw" at Katwoude on 25th July 1846".
