Biography
Louis Vallée (1573-1653) was a French Baroque painter, notable for his dramatic and emotive compositions. The depicted scene, possibly based on classical mythology, shows three figures in a heightened state of emotion. The figure in the center, a woman in a flowing red dress, appears to be lifeless, attended to by an older man. A third figure in the background, a young woman with a bow and arrow, observes with a somber expression. Vallée's use of light and shadow creates a powerful sense of drama, highlighting the figures' emotional states and enhancing the narrative quality of the work. His paintings are often characterized by their theatrical gestures and expressive faces, adding to the overall impact of his compositions.
