Biography
Jan I, Count of Holland, was born in 1284 and ruled from 1290 until his death in 1299. He was known for his role in minting new coins, which featured the heraldic arms of Holland - a lion rampant on a shield, surrounded by a crescent moon - on the obverse. These coins, like the silver "Hollandse penning" pictured here, demonstrate the Count's authority and artistic tastes.
