Biography
Jacob van Schuppen (1670-1751) was a Dutch Baroque painter known for his portraits. Born in Fontainebleau, France, he became court painter to the Habsburgs in Vienna, Austria. He was a master of depicting the opulent dress and armor of the nobility, with a keen eye for detail and a sense of realism. Schuppen’s work includes many portraits of prominent figures, including military commanders, aristocracy and emperors. His portraits are characterized by their realistic portrayal of the sitter's features and their meticulously rendered clothing and accessories. This focus on the details of dress and demeanor, rather than the sitter's emotional state, is typical of baroque portraiture.
