Biography
D. Schmidt was a printmaker active in the 19th century who specialised in portraits. The artwork pictured is an engraving, a technique that uses etching and incising a metal plate to create a relief pattern for printing. The image shows a portrait of a woman, likely of high social standing, captured in an oval frame and depicted in a realistic style. The engraved lines, known as hatches, are fine and create a smooth tonal range, adding depth and detail to the portrait.
