Biography
Byam Shaw (1872-1919) was a British painter born in India, known for his historical and literary illustrations, particularly those of Shakespeare and Dante. Shaw was an influential member of the Newlyn School, a group of artists who favoured realism and naturalism, as seen in his paintings depicting historical scenes with detailed and often dramatic portrayals of figures. He was also a skilled illustrator, known for his black and white drawings and illustrations that captured the essence of literary works. His works are celebrated for their technical skill and historical accuracy, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
