Biography
Barnett Newman (1905-1970) was an American painter known for his abstract, minimalist works. Born in New York City, Newman's art, characterized by large-scale canvases with simple, bold stripes and vivid colors, became synonymous with Color Field painting. He believed in the directness of color and the power of pure form, creating works that emphasize the immediacy of the viewing experience. Newman's "zips" - vertical bands of color, often black, that divide the canvas - became a trademark, highlighting the emptiness surrounding them, inviting the viewer to engage with the vastness of the space and color.
