Gustave Loiseau made this little painting, "The Small Bourgeois House," with oil on canvas. Look at those marks! I bet Loiseau was really feeling it that day. I can imagine him outside in front of the house, squinting at the light and color, and trying to get it down quickly. I can almost feel him moving the brush back and forth, side to side, trying to catch the glint of light on that long stone wall. Look how it curves around the corner! I sympathize with the artist trying to capture a world of solid things. It is such a challenge. And I admire that he didn’t get bogged down in details, but kept the whole thing moving and alive with all those little brushstrokes. The paint isn’t too thick, but it’s got enough texture to give you a sense of the surface and air. There’s something very alive and present in this painting, don't you think? It reminds me of other painters like Monet. I find it heartening to see how artists are in an ongoing conversation with one another!
