Richard Tepe made this photograph of the Kleine Eetzaal at Paleis Het Loo with what looks like infinite patience. He's created an amazing sense of depth, even with this limited palette. The beauty of this piece lies in its material aspects; the texture, the surface, and the light, all of which work to create a very particular atmosphere. When I look closely, I love the way the light catches the chandeliers. They almost look like they are floating in mid air. It gives the image a sense of space and possibility. Ultimately, it’s a piece about atmosphere and the quiet grandeur of old palaces. It reminds me a little of Atget, who had a similar eye for the melancholy beauty of interior spaces. Just goes to show, art is an ongoing conversation across time.
