swirly brushstroke

Franz Kline made "Palladio" with big swooping brushstrokes of black and white paint. Imagine him, standing close, then stepping back, considering. The painting feels like it came into being through intuition, a back-and-forth between control and chance. I sympathize with Kline, trying to make sense of this push and pull. What was he thinking, layering those thick strokes, letting some drip and bleed? I'm curious about that central square - a window, maybe? Or a frame for something not yet visible? These marks communicate feeling, intention, meaning. Kline and his contemporaries were really onto something, this conversation about mark-making. I always feel like artists are in an ongoing exchange of ideas, inspiring one another. Painting as a form of expression, where ambiguity and uncertainty are welcome, allows for multiple readings.
