Victor Müller created this graphite drawing, titled *Stehender männlicher Akt nach links, mit gesenktem Kopf, die Linke in die Hüfte gestützt*, or "Standing Male Nude to the Left, with Lowered Head, Left Hand on Hip," at an unknown date. Müller was a 19th-century German painter associated with the Munich School. Here, we see a male figure rendered in classical style, yet the figure's downcast gaze departs from traditional representations of male strength and dominance. His posture, with a hand on his hip, hints at a moment of introspection or vulnerability. This work offers a glimpse into the complex negotiation of gender roles during the 19th century. While embracing academic traditions, Müller subtly questions the established notions of masculinity. The figure appears burdened by thought, inviting us to consider the emotional and psychological landscape of men in a rapidly changing era. Through his delicate shading and attention to form, Müller has created a space for empathy and a contemplation on the weight of societal expectations.
