This is Modigliani’s ‘Cariatide, vue de face, demi-figure’, and it's made with pencil on paper. Look at the economy of line, the sureness of it! I imagine Modigliani in his studio, wrestling with form, trying to capture the essence of his subject with the fewest possible marks. Think of him, searching for the perfect curve of the face, the tilt of the head, the way the light falls on the body. The eyes are like these almond shapes, so simplified and yet so expressive. And those breasts, those perfect, simple circles. It's about getting the most with the least. This drawing has a haunting presence, like a memory or a dream. In this way, artists are in an ongoing conversation, always learning from each other, always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
