Kateryna Lysovenko made "Monument Near the Arch of Friendship of Peoples" with what looks like ink on paper. It's about immediacy, a process laid bare. The black lines create a stark contrast to the white backdrop, making the reclining figure jump out. It’s a confident, fluid line, but not without its wobbles, which only makes it more appealing. It reveals the artist’s hand, the speed and rhythm of the gesture. Then there's that splodge of ink for the hair, it’s so direct, kind of gutsy and humorous. The leaves hanging down like teardrops or little tongues, feel like they are whispering secrets. It reminds me of Matisse's line drawings, a similar economy and openness. It’s this sense of unfinishedness, of the process being visible, that makes the image so alive. Art isn’t about answers, it’s about the questions we ask along the way.
