Arnoud Schaepkens created this etching, titled *Landscape with Two Tall Trees*, in the Netherlands during the 19th century. The image depicts a dense thicket of trees rendered with a network of fine lines. The printmaking medium was gaining popularity in Europe at this time. Artists valued its reproducibility, portability, and relative affordability, compared to painting. Landscape imagery was rising in the Netherlands, as artists saw the Dutch countryside as a symbol of national pride. This work reflects an appreciation of nature but also the institutional framework around art production. Exhibitions in academies and galleries provided exposure for artists, and the art market was growing. To understand Schaepkens' work more fully, we might look to exhibition records, art criticism of the time, and biographical information to locate him within the cultural landscape of the Netherlands. Appreciating art involves understanding its historical, institutional and social contexts.
