Charles Burton’s ink drawing captures the United States Branch Bank on Wall Street. Notice the Greek architectural style of the bank. The columns and pediment evoke classical temples, symbols of stability, reason, and order since antiquity. This architectural language goes beyond mere aesthetics. From ancient Greece to the Renaissance, and here in 19th century America, the conscious revival of classical forms represents an attempt to connect with a glorious past, lending authority and legitimacy to new institutions. Think of the Roman use of the arch, a symbol adopted from the Etruscans, then re-imagined during the Renaissance, and now it reappears in modern architecture. The use of classical architectural elements reflects a deep-seated desire for permanence. It engages our collective memory, hinting at an idealized past. These motifs reappear across time, each instance layered with new meanings, yet still resonating with the echoes of history.
