Joseph von Führich created this sketch, "Die drei Heiden des Recto als Aktfiguren", at an unknown date using an unknown medium. Führich lived in a time when art was deeply intertwined with national and religious identity. Here, we see three nude figures, identified as heathens, sketched with delicate lines. Führich's work often explored religious themes, reflecting the 19th-century interest in spirituality and morality. Yet, by portraying these figures nude, he invites us to consider the historical and cultural views of the "other". Were these men heathens? Or were they men before the imposition of Christian dogma? How do we reckon with the use of the nude body to represent those who were seen as outsiders? This piece provides space to reflect on how historical artworks carry complex layers of meaning, shaped by the social and cultural values of their time. It encourages us to question how we see and interpret representations of people from different backgrounds and beliefs.
