This photograph of Isabel Wachenheimer leaning on a boat railing, was captured by an anonymous artist using black and white film. The tones are soft, the focus not quite sharp, like a memory trying to solidify itself. You can sense the constant motion of the sea here, the gentle roll of the boat, the feeling of the wind. The light is flat, diffused, so you get this overall sense of gray, and a feeling of distance. The textures are amazing though, despite the lack of sharp focus, you can see the grain of the wooden rail, the gentle waves on the water. Isabel's coat is a study in light and shadow. The texture of the material, the folds and creases around her waist held by the belt. This photo reminds me of those blurry, dreamy images by Gerhard Richter, where the blur isn't a mistake, but the whole point, about how we perceive and remember. It's not about clarity, it's about feeling. Ultimately this photo invites us to contemplate the nature of memory and perception, how they shape each other.
