Curatorial notes

This is a small etching by Pieter van Avont, showing a semi-nude child with a cross. Note how the artist uses delicate, closely placed lines to build up tone and texture. This technique, known as hatching, creates a soft, almost dreamlike quality. The child’s body is rendered with a gentle curve, emphasizing the vulnerability and innocence often associated with childhood. Yet, the inclusion of the cross introduces a layer of symbolic weight. The cross, usually a symbol of suffering and redemption, is here juxtaposed with the purity of youth. Van Avont's choices prompt us to consider the complex interplay between innocence and experience, faith and the corporeal. This etching functions as a meditation on these themes, inviting viewers to contemplate the deeper meanings embedded within its delicate lines. Art doesn't give us all the answers, it asks us to explore.
