Njideka Akunyili Crosby made “The Beautyful Ones” Series #7 using a combination of acrylic paint, charcoal, and collage on paper. Look closely and you'll see how she layers different techniques, almost like memories piling up. The yellow ochre feels so present, doesn't it? It's the color of the cars, the girl’s shirt, and it almost radiates out of the piece, connecting everything. The artist isn't afraid to let her process show; you can see how she builds up the layers. You can almost feel her hand moving across the surface. Take a look at the girl's eyes. They draw you in, don't they? They are so carefully observed. The collage elements add another layer of depth and complexity to the work. It reminds me a bit of Romare Bearden, how he used collage to tell stories about community and identity. It's not just a picture; it's a conversation. Crosby leaves space for us to bring our own experiences and interpretations.
