Editor: Here we have "Ontmoeting van den raadpensionaris Cats met Willem II," or "Meeting of the Grand Pensionary Cats with William II," an engraving from 1828. It almost feels like a stage setting with those strong verticals of the columns in the background and that squared tile work on the floor. How do you read the visual components in this print? Curator: The rigorous formalism, specifically the strong lines of the engraving, dictates our entry point. Note the distinct contrast between light and shadow which lends itself to a theatrical reading, as you observed. Examine how the artist Velijn utilizes linear perspective. Where does your eye travel, and what does that communicate to you regarding spatial relations? Editor: I definitely see what you mean. The eye is directed back, up, then across with each line the artist lays down. So, how might we consider that within its materiality? Curator: Observe the limitations and the opportunities presented by the medium of engraving itself. Each line, each dot is a deliberate act. What kind of feeling is generated by the combination of dense clustered marks in the costumes versus the sparseness of the background space? It projects an awareness and even confidence of technique. How does the manipulation of tone shape your impression of the scene, quite independent of subject matter? Editor: It's really powerful to consider the medium as its own language, communicating almost as much as the subject. I'll be sure to bring this focus on composition and the intentionality behind technique to my next encounters with engravings! Curator: Precisely. Attending to such visual factors of an artwork gives us all we need to interpret its internal dynamic.
