Editor: That's interesting, I hadn’t thought about the theatrical aspect. I was more focused on the expressionistic style and the slightly melancholic air. But the hat does add another layer. Curator: Exactly. It almost serves as a mask, doesn't it? An external marker to define a character. What's underneath could be very different. And that backdrop, a flat wash of what color, fiery orange? Editor: Yes, quite intense! It highlights, for me, the tension between vulnerability and a sort of self-aware performance. Curator: Indeed! So we might say this boy presents both an outward performance signified by the hat, yet perhaps the raw color conveys raw truth underneath. And which might be more truthful? Do you suppose the color and brushwork intend to undermine the presumed social function of the hat? Editor: I see what you mean. The symbols are competing, making the image all the more complex. Thanks, that’s a new layer for me. Curator: And for me, considering Czobel's use of color, perhaps the boy in his hat yearns to discard the mask. These artists… they ask so many layered questions.
