This silver skull watch was crafted by Isaac Penard, in the 17th century. A potent reminder of mortality, it carries the weight of vanitas traditions. The skull— a symbol we find repeated through time, from ancient Roman mosaics to festive Mexican celebrations of the Day of the Dead. Think of the memento mori in medieval art. Similarly, we find skulls staring back at us, whispering of our inevitable end. They invite us to contemplate the fleeting nature of earthly pleasures. This skull is not just a symbol of death, but a symbol of time itself. Like the ouroboros, this symbol has an inherent cyclicality. From medieval allegories to contemporary art, the skull continues to evolve, revealing the timeless dance between life and death.
