Charles Nègre captured this image of the library at the Vincennes asylum using the calotype process, a photographic technique that renders soft, almost dreamlike images. It's impossible to ignore the setting: an asylum. During the 19th century, asylums were envisioned as places of refuge and reform, but quickly became sites of social control. In the photograph, patients are seen reading and writing. What narratives did they find within those books? What stories did they dare to write? Nègre’s composition complicates the traditional narrative of the asylum. He invites us to consider the humanity of the individuals confined within those walls and the power of knowledge and expression in the face of institutionalization. The photograph blurs the lines between observation and participation, prompting us to reflect on our own assumptions about mental health and social inclusion.
