Editor: This drawing, “Beker met een landschap in een ovaal,” from around the early 17th century, is an anonymous work using ink and engraving. The intricate details forming a landscape within the oval is stunning. What compositional elements stand out to you? Curator: The relationship between the micro and macro elements of design command attention, particularly the opposition and synthesis of linear, geometric form and naturalistic depiction. How does the structure work? The internal oval is an exercise in organic depiction of landscape while the geometric border both emphasizes and contrasts with it. Notice also the balance implied between flora depicted on the borders, framing the landscape. Editor: It’s almost as if the landscape is a jewel, encased in this very rigid setting! I noticed a bunch of pen strokes – are these functional or decorative? Curator: The medium and tools used are functional insofar as line is a crucial pictorial element in this pen and ink landscape; however, the repeated and regular use of such strokes moves the eye, establishing hierarchy through pattern, not through reference to an object that such line might create. These pen strokes thus, are decorative insofar as that ornamentation becomes meaning within the visual economy of the artwork. Editor: That makes sense. So it’s more about how those strokes are used, not just that they are there. Curator: Precisely. Do you think this form reinforces content of the depicted landscape in some way? Editor: Perhaps suggesting human mastery over the wildness of nature through geometric and stylized ornamentation? It appears that the artist wanted us to explore multiple worlds at once. Thank you! Curator: Indeed! Understanding visual language unlocks more avenues for interpretation.
