Richard Eurich made this painting, Lyme Regis, with oil on canvas. The colors are muted, almost like a faded photograph, and the paint application is smooth, without much texture. It's like he’s trying to capture a memory more than a scene. I love the way he flattens everything out, especially the buildings. They’re reduced to these simple, geometric shapes, which gives the painting a kind of innocent, folk-art feel. Look at the wall to the side of the main building, where the pinky-red brickwork peeps through the render. I can see all these marks, and they seem to want to resolve into a shape, but never quite make it. Eurich made a lot of paintings of coastal scenes, and he often included figures in them. There's something about the stillness and simplicity of this painting that really speaks to me. It's like a quiet moment captured in time, but it's also open to interpretation. Like a dream, you know?
