Matsutani made this painting, Paralléle 06-8, with vinyl adhesive and graphite. It's pretty much black and white, but in between there's so much going on, like when you look up close at a shadow. I like to think about how materials behave. The vinyl glue here, it's got its own thing, right? It wants to be gloopy, but also smooth. Notice that thick, shiny edge on the right side of the white form. It's like the glue had its own idea about how to make a line. Then there's the graphite, making these dark, moody fields, scratched and brushed. The painting feels like a landscape, but also like something being born. It reminds me of work by Alberto Burri, who used rough materials to make abstract forms. Art's always talking to art, an ongoing conversation. So, you know, maybe this painting is just one little thought in a much bigger discussion, a process, always changing.
