This untitled print, made by EtchingRoom1 around 2016, appears to be a medley of hard and soft marks. The palette is monochrome, which gives a nice focus on form and texture. You can feel how the artist allowed the process to lead them, layer upon layer. The composition is like a dreamscape, mixing cityscapes, figures and what looks like Russian text. My eye is drawn to the large building towards the middle, those little windows all in a row. The texture has been created by a hatching effect, with a number of fine lines going in the same direction to indicate tone and shadow. It’s like a metaphor for society, a series of individuals all pressed up next to each other. In a way, this reminds me of some of Nancy Spero's work. Both are playful and encourage us to embrace uncertainty and accept multiple readings.
